Whether you are dealing with depression, anxiety, illness, relationship struggles, trauma or just interested in self-exploration, therapy can be an effective step on your journey to finding healing and growth. I offer a safe and respectful environment to work through what are often difficult and sensitive issues. My goal is to help you overcome obstacles and self-destructive patterns so that you can live a more authentic and joyful life. I come from a humanistic approach, combining traditional psychology with mindfulness-based practices. I bring compassion, curiosity and humor to my therapy practice to assist you in uncovering the answers within yourself and finding relief from emotional pain.
As a couple therapist, I help you identify negative interaction patterns that undermine the security of the relationship. My approach is based on Emotionally Focused Therapy (and I have trained under Dr. Sue Johnson, the founder of EFT). I encourage couples to engage in communication and emotional expression that will promote closeness and intimacy. Safety must be established for partners to become open and trusting. When both partners feel acknowledged and secure, more satisfying interaction patterns can develop.
In addition to my work with individuals and couples, I also facilitate groups and lead workshops on self-care, relationships and communication, stress-management, illness and emotions, among other topics. I hold a BA from UNC- Chapel Hill and a Masters in Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. While living in California, I developed an interest and trained extensively in working with those with chronic illness and cancer. I am also trained in mindfulness-based practices and hold a certificate from Duke Integrative Medicine.
